Headlined by Governor Joet Garcia, the delegates from the province of Bataan—mostly mayors from its 11 municipalities and one city—recently attended a two-day workshop on blockchain technology in Zug, Switzerland.

The event was sponsored by the province’s digital and blockchain partner nChain, the infrastructure developer of Bitcoin SV and an international blockchain firm focusing on research and development, patent portfolio management, and offering software, IP licensing, and consulting services across industries like iGaming, supply chain, and finance.

Aside from the Bataan LGU, nChain, the developer behind Bitcoin SV Node software, Teranode, LiteClient, Kensei and more, also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and launched an incubator program called Block Dojo Philippines.

During the event, the attendees explored blockchain solutions for e-governance, micropayments, tokenization, and web3, with Garcia expressing gratitude for the partnership.

Through blockchain, the province expressed its desire to enhance transparency, efficiency, and security in governance, streamline administrative processes, and stimulate economic growth.

“The adoption of blockchain technology could potentially streamline administrative processes, reduce corruption, and provide better services to the people of Bataan. By exploring these cutting-edge solutions, the province aims to enhance transparency, efficiency, and security in its governance systems,” the delegates shared, adding that they are aiming to use blockchain-based micropayments and tokenization to transform financial transactions and increase accessibility to assets.

Accordingly, Garcia conveyed his sincere appreciation to nChain for their welcoming reception of the Bataan delegation and for establishing a partnership with the Provincial Government of Bataan in their endeavor to become pioneers in the field of blockchain technology.

Moreover, the governor also emphasized the province’s dedication to embracing blockchain technology and utilizing its potential to benefit the residents of Bataan, showing his optimism about Bataan’s future as a pioneer in adopting blockchain solutions, fostering innovation, economic growth, and improved governance.

Bataan’s Blockchain Efforts

Last January, the provincial government of Bataan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with nChain to create a digital platform in Bataan, designed to enhance efficiency and simplify government services by improving existing systems and procedures.

In October 2022, the inaugural Global Blockchain Summit (GBS) took place at the Bataan People’s Center. The event, held in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) through the ICT Industry Development Bureau (IIDB), aimed to bring together industry leaders and experts to discuss the advancements and potential of blockchain technology.

Prior to these, Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao also visited the province for a potential partnership with the local government unit.
