Filipina entrepreneur Sheila Lirio Marcelo, founder and CEO of the education company Proof of Learn, Inc. (POL),  stated that she established the web 3 company to help students learn while earning cryptocurrency. According to her, the company’s objective is to make “education accessible globally.”

“As you’re completing courses, we’re giving you money. You can turn those rewards into cash or crypto to learn advanced courses,” she told ANC in an interview.

POL is a Web3 education platform that aims to unlock accessible, high-quality education across the world through blockchain and a learn-to-earn protocol. Last January, it successfully raised approximately $17M in a seed round led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA). Marcelo noted that POL are targeting Filipino students that are already knowledgeable about Web2 and still want to learn how to code on the blockchain and craft smart contracts.

“I’m Filipina first and foremost… I feel God gave me a blessing and a privilege to help more people,” she said.

She added that the project also aims to work with universities and business process outsourcing (BPO) firms.

“There are numerous business models. We’re gonna work with BPO employers. If you have web2 developers, we want to talk to them,” she stated.

MetaCrafters.io, the first project of the company, is a “part game, part learning platform” where student developers have to learn Web3 or decentralized apps that run on blockchain. Initially, Metacrafters students will pay their tuition for courses, but upon completion, they will earn back their tuition with additional rewards.

To kickstart the project, Metacrafters partnered with gaming guild Yield Guild Games (YGG) for its pilot program which will give selected YGG scholars access to its Learn-to-earn platform. The scholars in the YGG pilot program will have their tuition covered by YGG in exchange for sharing a portion of their rewards. Further, according to her, they drew inspiration from a documentary featuring a 65-year old Lola Vergie in Cabanatuan that earns and plays play-to-earn game Axie Infinity. (Read more on: This Documentary Perfectly Captures the Play-to-Earn Phenomenon in the Philippines)

“It really inspired me… We really need to do something to help the Philippines (be) not only consumers of the internet but help them to create because Filipinos are incredibly talented,” Marcelo expressed.

Marcelo also founded Care.com in 2006, a revolutionized care services on Web2 by connecting skilled workers with fair-paying jobs in the care industry. Like Care.com, Marcelo promises that POL’s Metacrafters is designed with accessibility and equality as two of its key values, “making high-quality education accessible to the 32 million developers around the globe for whom these new skills may open up life-changing employment opportunities.”
