Yield Guild Games Launches ‘Onchain Guilds’ on Ethereum L2 Blockchain Base
Web3 gaming guild protocol Yield Guild Games (YGG) announced that it is launching a new platform called “Onchain Guilds” on Base, a layer two solution for the Ethereum blockchain.
What’s the significance: Onchain Guilds will allow guilds to build and manage their reputation through verifiable records of their work and achievements on the blockchain—all while enjoying Ethereum’s security and Base’s benefits.
Short Background: The announcement was made by YGG Co-Founder Gabby Dizon during a fireside chat with Emfarsis Director Leah Callon-Butler at the YGG Play Summit Industry Day.
- Why Guilds? According to Dizon, who has experience in game development since 2003, he was fascinated by how blockchain technology works until he discovered NFTs and tokens in 2018.
- It was not until Axie Infinity attracted Filipinos during the COVID-19 pandemic that a scholarship system started—mostly led by gaming guilds.
- The Born of YGG: Together with co-founders Beryl Li and Owl, they then started to build a startup that will offer a platform to grow guilds and help them scale.
- So they invited guild leaders to build software that would help with their scholarship systems, Dizon shared.

The Importance of Guilds: Dizon then stressed that guilds remain a key factor in the web3 gaming community, though some interests lay down during the bear market.
- What are Guilds in Web3? Guilds are formed with the same people having the same interests. Guilds in the crypto space are centered around specific web3 games.
- YGG wants to cater to these guilds and help them conserve despite any market conditions, the YGG co-founder explained.
“I see guilds as the small to medium enterprises of the internet. What makes web3 special is that you have the ability to own assets as a group, and that’s never really been possible on the internet before, except if you’re in a specific video game. And now these skills are coming together. This phenomenon of us getting together on the Internet and owning assets in the multiplayer way is really something that’s cool.”

The Birth of Onchain Guilds: Since guilds are a group of people doing things together, making an on-chain primitive of these guilds will make them powerful, as per Dizon.
- Inspiration: According to the YGG Co-Founder, he was inspired by the web3 social media app Forecaster to create a unique on-chain primitive for the communications industry.
- The Beta Version of Onchain Guilds was launched on the third week of November, 2024, with around 30 guilds trying the new platform.
- Use Case: Dizon also emphasized that he expects guilds to adopt sub-specializations depending on their interest, like e-sports, content creators, players, and other use cases, to make their own guilds better.
“We’ve been serving these guilds all of this time but we wanted to create this on-chain primitive for them to really have their own on-chain identity. And that’s that’s where the inspiration for Onchain Guilds came from. There’s a lot of people doing different crypto primitives—in DeFi, in NFTs, but we have what we want is to create this primitive for groups of people owning assets together.”

Why Base?
“I’ve been very fortunate to meet with Jesse Pollak earlier this year and Jesse is very passionate about bringing everyone around the world on-chain. And of course, Coinbase being started America, but they’ve done a big push towards emerging markets in Africa, in India, in Southeast Asia and we really bonded over just a shared mission of having equal opportunity and access to all of these different economic opportunities on-chain. And I was telling Jesse about Onchain Guilds and he got really excited about it.”

What Base Could Bring to Onchain Guilds?
“When we’re talking about web3, when we’re talking about on-chain, when we’re talking about gaming, what we’re talking about is a new economy, a new internet where if you’re a game developer or a player, you actually know what’s going on.
