Through a Google “doodle” countdown timer, search engine Google shows support for the upcoming Ethereum merge by marking the time left until the upgrade.

Searches on the platform containing any variation of “Ethereum Merge” or “The Merge” will show a countdown ticker, with the estimated time left until the Merge based on the current difficulty, hash rate, and merge difficulty. The timer also features two pandas running toward each other—the two will get closer as the Merge draws nearer.

Speculations state that the two bears should soon merge to create one panda, which would be the mascot for Ethereum’s transition.

The Ethereum Merge is set to reduce the energy consumption of the blockchain by 99.95%, which can ultimately lessen the carbon footprint of Ethereum and make it one of the most eco-friendly blockchains in the market. (Read more: What is the Ethereum Merge?)

In a tweet, Google Cloud developer Sam Padilla said that the timer was “a fun little surprise” as well as a way to show their appreciation of “the work that has been going into this for years.”

Padilla also shared that the idea was brought up within the past couple of weeks among employees who wanted to create “some cool easter egg” for Ethereum’s pending transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake. According to him, the idea was created in the company’s internal Web3 community chats.

Last May, Google’s cloud group formed a new team specifically for building blockchain infrastructures. They looked for developers running blockchain applications, crypto, and other related projects.

According to Amit Zavery, Vice President at Google Cloud, the creation of the team is to “make the Google Cloud Platform the first choice for developers in the field.” (Read more: Google Creates Web3 Team to Capitalize on Crypto Popularity)
