Internet influencer Boss G, or Mark Pascual in real life, posted on his personal Facebook account that he is now recovering after losing ₱150 million worth of funds—both from his and close friends’ and relatives’ investments—due to futures trading in cryptocurrency for the past two years.

What’s the significance: Boss G’s post raises awareness and warns crypto traders, whether experienced or newbies, to always be mindful of the market and not be greedy just to earn a profit.

What Happened:

  • According to Pascual, he lost control and did “revenge trading” because he wanted to bring back his abundant lifestyle after experiencing his lowest point in life and selling his established assets.

“I had so much pero ‘di pa rin ako nakuntento at naghangad pa rin ako ng mas malaking pera. I’m not saying na iwasan niyo ang crypto. Just learn not to be greedy and risk only what you can afford to lose. There is no such thing as easy money.”

[Translation: I had so much wealth but I thought that was still not enough and dreamed of having more money. I am not saying that you should avoid investing in cryptocurrencies. But learn to be not greedy and risk only the money that you can afford to lose. There is no such thing as ‘easy money.’]

  • Message to Close Friends: It seems like there are close friends and relatives of Pascual who entrusted their investment funds to him to grow and trade it in crypto.
    • He then asked for more time to bring back what they had entrusted to him, assuring them that he would do his best to recover.

“Wala na akong mukhang maihaharap sa mga tao. Sobrang nahihiya na ako. Hindi ako masamang tao pero oo, nalulong ako sa trading nang walang proper trading plan. I’m sorry for everything. Sobrang f***ed up na ng utak ko. Hindi ko tatalikuran ang obligasyon ko sa mga nagtiwala sa akin, kailangan ko lang ng oras.”

[Translation: I am so embarrassed and cannot face them anymore. I am not a bad person but I admit that I got addicted to trading because I had no proper trading plan. I am so sorry for everything. My mind is so f***ed up. I will not run from my obligations to those who trusted me but I need time to recover.]

Hindi ko tatalikuran ang obligasyon ko sa mga taong nagtiwala sa akin at babawi ako sa inyo. Babalik ako sa taas—gagawin ko lahat.”

Between the lines: Content creators sharing their bad experiences from futures trading might affect how the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) might allow Commodity Futures Contracts to be offered by local crypto exchanges that own a virtual asset service provider (VASP) license.

  • In fact, when the SEC decided to ban international crypto exchange Binance in the country, one of the reasons that the regulator stressed was that the unlicensed exchange offers illegal securities, including futures trading.

On the other hand, it should be noted that after offering short-selling transactions, the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) is rumored to offer derivatives soon, including futures contracts.

  • Remember: If the PSE might receive a green light from the SEC to offer derivatives, crypto exchanges can also offer them.
  • However: Crypto lawyer Atty. Rafael Padilla argued that the PSE might not launch futures trading soon for regulatory reasons in his paper written and published on BitPinas.
