Ethereum Community Gathers in Thailand for Devcon
Devcon Southeast Asia began on November 12, with opening keynotes from Ethereum Foundation’s Skylar Weaver, Josh Stark, Aya Miyaguchi, and co-founder Vitalik Buterin.
During the keynote, Weaver emphasized Ethereum’s mission for users and developers and immediately acknowledged the maturity of its current ecosystem:
“Ethereum is for users, it is where ideas enter production and is home to the most mature cases.”
Meanwhile, Aya Miyaguchi discussed Ethereum’s philosophy while at the same time highlighting the achievements so far of the blockchain, stressing that Ethereum is more ready than before.
- 8,000 monthly active contributors
- 100 community hubs across 6 continents
- 99% less energy consumption after PoW to PoS migration
- Cost: avg. $0.80/transaction (vs. $3.00 in 2017)
- 1M transactions per day (vs. 200K in 2017)
- Privacy advancements with programmable cryptography
- Better wallet UX with account abstraction
Finally, Vitalik Buterin took the audience down memory lane and ended his keynote with the roadmap for Ethereum’s future:
- Further upgrades to decentralization, censorship resistance, quantum resistance
- Progressive upgrades to efficiency and scale
- Upgrades to DAS enable 100k+ TPS on L2
Buterin said Ethereum has scaled enough that a wide variety of applications are now possible. He expected a trend tower “mixed financial and non-financial” types of projects and encouraged the developers in the room to build them.
