Dogecoin Shorts Get Rekt
Futures traders betting against Dogecoin are feeling the burn as the original meme coin rides Bitcoin’s latest rally to new highs.
What’s happening:
- Dogecoin surged to above $0.42 on Tuesday, closely following Bitcoin’s fresh all-time high (which it reached quietly, or perhaps it’s just that it happened while this side of the world is sleeping) of above $94,000.
- The foremost memecoin is currently at $0.38, and is now up 381% in the past 365 days.
- The price swing upward resulted in $28.5 million in liquidations as per Coinglass data.
- One Binance trader reportedly lost over $1 million on a short position, Decrypt reported.
Why is this happening? Dogecoin has captured outsized attention, partly due to billionaire Elon Musk’s persistent promotion of the coin.
- Musk, a long-time Dogecoin advocate, has amplified its cultural relevance, jokingly referring to DOGE as a cornerstone of his hypothetical “Department of Governmental Efficiency (D.O.G.E.)” in Trump’s future administration.
What’s next: Dogecoin remains a speculative favorite, but with a US administration that has even named one of its new department as DOGE, Dogecoin is perhaps here to stay.
