More often than not, blockchain, web3, and other related tech events are mainly hosted by tech-concerned private firms and entities.

But, this time, the government, represented by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), in partnership with the Provincial Government of Bataan, took the initiative and organized the country’s Global Blockchain Summit, held last October 26-27, 2022, at the Bataan People’s Center in Balanga City, Bataan.

The two-day summit was attended by government officials, local and international blockchain experts, and industry leaders who participated in discussions about the current state of the blockchain industry and the state of blockchain regulations and compliance in the Philippines.

Panels about women in blockchain, the adoption of blockchain technology, revolutionizing art through NFT and P2E gaming, and future plans to strengthen the blockchain industry in the country are also part of the discussions.

In line with furthering the adoption of blockchain technology in the country, local government leaders, especially the DICT, have called upon the industry leaders present at the summit to lend them a hand in creating a blockchain and web3-enabled Philippines.

BRIGHT VISION. Engr. Emmanuel Pineda of the Authority of the Freeport Area of Bataan shares how he sees the blockchain industry as part of the country’s future.

Starting from the host province, Bataan Governor Jose Enrique S. Garcia III relayed the province’s goal to become “Bataanverse,” which he noted as a “reality in this province that will be realized in the near future.”

He also highlighted the Freeport Area of Bataan as the emerging hub for blockchain and future technologies. According to the governor, the AFAB will be conducive to cross-border trade and the exchange of digital assets, securities, commodities, options, and derivatives between and among international investors.

DICT Secretary Ivan John E. Uy also stressed that the emerging industry brought by web3 and blockchain would play a crucial role in creating employment and investment opportunities, as well as advancing countryside development even during the global pandemic.

“As the country fully transitions to the new normal and to a new administration, the DICT remains steadfast in creating programs and projects that hope to address the growing demand from the consumers, the builders, and the enablers within the web3.0 and blockchain industries. The DICT commits to continuously work with other government agencies and private organizations in Web3.0 and Blockchain Industry, for us to improve our existing initiatives and calibrate our priorities,” he stated.

Consequently, DICT Undersecretary for ICT Industry Development Jocelle Batapa-Sigue emphasized in her closing message a call for action for all key players and partners in the blockchain industry to start collaborations and initiate the formation of a blockchain industry association.

“Formalizing the Web3 Alliance will bind everyone here with a greater sense of shared responsibility, as partners and stakeholders from the blockchain industry commit to become a part of something larger than themselves and truly make a difference,” she stated.
