Allen San Miguel, the country manager of international crypto exchange OKX Wallet for the Philippines, answered BitPinas Junior Editor Nathaniel Cajuday to discuss the entityโ€™s plans in the country.ย

In Focus: OKX is an international cryptocurrency exchange.

  • Recent news: OKX SG, the Singapore arm of global crypto exchange OKX, has received a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), allowing the exchange to provide key services like buying and selling cryptocurrencies and transferring money across borders.
  • Consequently, Gracie Lin was appointed as the CEO of OKX SG. She has nearly 20 years of experience in finance and tech, including roles at Grab and MAS.
  • From April to June 2024, OKX ranked fourth as the most used and downloaded crypto exchange in the country, as per a report from Sensory Tower using Google Play Store data.

The following excerpt from the interview focuses on San Miguelโ€™s response on how they feel about connecting with the crypto community in Bicol, as well as their future plans to produce more crypto educational events.

Nathaniel Cajuday, Junior Editor, BitPinas: Good evening, everyone. We are here in Naga City, and Allen San Miguel, the OKX Country Manager for the Philippines, is with us. We’ll be asking him about the Bicol community and tonight’s event. How has the community been?

Allen San Miguel, Country Manager for PH, OKX: The Bicol community has welcomed us very warmly, and it’s continuing to grow, as Isma (Ismael Jerusalem, Ownly CEO) mentioned earlier. They’re expanding, and they even have homegrown project leads, like Sparkpoint. We’re really supportive because we see potential in Bicol, similar to how Cebu became a key city for crypto in the Visayas. This region could be next.

Nathaniel Cajuday, Junior Editor, BitPinas: After this event, whatโ€™s next for OKX Philippines, its initiatives in the Bicol Region, and the rest of the country?

Allen San Miguel, Country Manager for PH, OKX: For the Bicol Region, weโ€™ll continue supporting Isma and his projects, along with other community events like trader meetups. Nationally, OKX is hosting an event on September 14 with Web3+AI, where OKX Wallet is the official wallet partner. We also have Token 2049 coming up, followed by the big Blockchain Campus Conference in Mindanao in October, which we’re partnering with OKX Wallet for as well. We’re really pushing for OKX Wallet to become one of the top five wallets used in the Philippines.

In November, thereโ€™s a traderโ€™s meetup with Coach Miranda, headed by IMPACT. We’re committed to continuing our work here, and weโ€™re also launching an educational platform to teach students and the general public about crypto and how to trade in the cryptocurrency market.

Nathaniel Cajuday, Junior Editor, BitPinas: One last question, just for contextโ€”congratulations to OKX for securing a crypto license in Singapore. How about in the Philippines? In our report, OKX is the fourth most popular exchange in the country. What steps is OKX taking to secure a crypto license here?

Allen San Miguel, Country Manager for PH, OKX: Thank you! Getting the MAS license in Singapore is a big achievementโ€”it allows us to facilitate cross-border crypto transactions. But here in the Philippines, the situation is different, especially with the BSP regulations.

As much as possible, weโ€™re exploring how we can obtain similar licenses here. We’re also working to spread awareness about crypto, while engaging with various government agencies in discussions about the VASP license. We’re trying to see how we can help broaden the market and establish clearer regulations around crypto. Our goal is to assist the government in determining whatโ€™s possible and whatโ€™s not when it comes to cryptocurrencies.
