In a brief interview, Web3 Metaversity Co-Leads Bianca Cruz and Ilao emphasized the Marshall Program, the capstone initiative aimed at providing economic opportunities and skill development for both community members and Filipinos beyond their network, with over 350 individuals having successfully graduated.

โ€œWith the marshall program, what we wanted to do was to give more opportunities, economic opportunities, to community members, as well as Filipinos outside of the community. We wanted to touch lives through. Helping them get jobs and upskill. This was actually a good initiative by YGG, we got 700 plus applicants and then we actually got that up, adding to 400 plus. 500 plus just graduated last week,โ€ Ilao shared.

Cruz added that their focus is on upskilling not just in crypto and blockchain but in broader sectors, including AI and decentralized projects, to prepare students for a variety of job opportunities.

  • To equip their students with AI skills, Cruz mentioned that she co-founded an AI education company, 10xme, which was acquired by YGG Pilipinas to create a new track for Metaversity called “Future of Work.”
  • This initiative emphasizes high-quality programs that teach AI and data-related skills, preparing students for roles in decentralized AI projects and gig work. The goal is to expand course offerings and onboard more students through focused crash courses.

Moreover, the two also emphasized their recent win with the Open Campus Accelerator (OC-X), backed by Animoca, where the project secured a $80,000 grant. Open Campus is a global collective of 30+ companies supporting startups to enhance education and give learners control over their data, promoting a more equitable and personalized system.

Cruz stated that the Web3 Metaversity applied as a startup and successfully pitched for a grant to develop foundational crash courses. These courses equip students with essential skills like marketing, productivity, leadership, and management before they apply for the Marshall program.ย

โ€œThe more people that accomplish the crash courses, the more people we can shortlist for future, marshall programs later on. And the whole story behind the crash course is that before they even get to apply for the Marshall program, we want them to be equipped with a foundational set of skills in marketing and productivity, and leadership and management so that they can be more successful as they go through the flagship,โ€ she explained.

Challenges

Ilao highlighted a key challenge Web3 Metaversity encountered while partnering with schools: the perception that their program is overly technical, focused solely on crypto and blockchain.

She emphasized that their courses extend far beyond these areas, offering valuable skills in marketing and leadership. Despite this misconception, their goal remains clearโ€”to promote the Wweb3 Metaversityโ€™s broader mission of upskilling community members and Filipinos in various fields.

Looking forward

The co-leads highlighted Web3 Metaversityโ€™s focus on providing opportunities beyond gaming, such as gig work and decentralized AI jobs.

Looking ahead, Cruz stated that the Metaversity aims to expand its student base, graduate more participants from the Marshall Program, and continue upskilling individuals in various sectors.ย

The long-term vision involves building a talent pool of graduates equipped with essential skills and connecting them with job opportunities in the web3 and AI industries.

โ€œWeโ€™re also looking into partners, like DashWorks or NexHire, weโ€™re actually creating a pool of talents of people that have graduated from the marshall program and from there we can try to fit them into these companies that are part of their skill set and their strengths. So itโ€™s like what we are doing now but on a bigger scale,โ€ Ilao concluded.
