When asked, many students find the current financial system as “slow-moving,” or “unequal.” According to computer science professor Cesare Fracassi from University of Texas, it is obvious that students interested in the topic of blockchain and cryptocurrency are the ones mistrustful of the current banking system. He admits that the more idealistic ones might want to create an alternative system “where the decision-making process isn’t centralized.” But the more pragmatic students are “interested in ways this technology can be used to improve companies’ performance and efficiency,” he said in a statement.

Coinbase, however, notes that one does not need to enroll full-time in an elite university to learn about cryptocurrency. MIT is offering a six-week online course while UC Berkeley offers Blockchain Fundamental classes online as well.

In the Philippines, an initiative to offer blockchain courses in universities has been kickstarted by NEM Philippines. These elective blockchain courses are now available in more than 10 universities in the country, including Ateneo de Manila University, University of the East, and Adamson University.
