October 29, 2018. Ms. Luna Javier, Creative Director and Co-Founder of Altitude Games, introduces blockchain technology to game developers and asks them to think about it as a new gaming platform. This, she said, will eliminate intimidation and confusion and will make the blockchain easier to understand.

On the second day of Gamefest 2018 that focused on blockchain gaming, Ms. Javier gave a good introduction on how to use blockchain in gaming. She effectively simplified its use, gave examples of its use cases, and even cited games that run on the blockchain.

Blockchain Explained

The nature of a “centralized game”

She started by giving an example of a character from World of WarCraft where a player spends a lot of time in upgrading his character, maxing its stats, and buying in-app purchases. This character, however, is owned by Blizzard because its data is stored in a central place (Blizzard server). If Blizzard decides to not support the game anymore and shuts down, the player will lose all the data and his character investment. This is the nature of a “centralized game”.

Decentralized

If this character from World of WarCraft is stored on a “decentralized” space. It is stored not just in a single, centralized place, but on a huge number of nodes (computers) through the decentralized technology called the blockchain. This means that if Blizzard decides not to operate its World of WarCraft anymore, the player can still keep his character with all its upgrades.

“If I own my character, I fully own it. Nobody can take it away. It doesn’t stay on one server. It is alive in all these nodes.” – Ms. Luna Javier, Creative Director and Co-Founder of Altitude Games

Ms. Javier then asked “Why is this relevant to me? Why is this important to blockchain gaming?” She then stated that fully owning a character “hasn’t really been done in digital games before,” and this is called TRUE ITEM OWNERSHIP.

True Item Ownership

With true item ownership explained, Ms. Javier tapped on “interoperability”. Upon fully owning a character or an item through blockchain, players can now use it to play on other games “as long as the game supports it”. Magic the Gathering cards were given as an example. Once it is on the blockchain and a player owns it, he can play it on other games such as Pokemon. Again, this is as long as the game supports it.

Use the Blockchain Only If It Adds Value to Your Game

The Creative Director and Co-Founder of Altitude Games emphasized that games on the blockchain should also have real gameplay that will keep players engaged. She added that players don’t need to know that the game is running on the blockchain.

The GameFest Conference 2018 was held at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia, Pasay on October 24 – 25, 2018 as a pre-event before the E-Sports Gaming Summit 2018. It’s a two-day event for game developers that showcased creative works from gaming developers, designers, & creatives.
