January 21, 2021 — Every person you ask will say the same thing: 2020 is unlike any other year.

The cryptocurrency industry felt the full brunt of the pandemic, as evidenced by the March 2020 crash. Nine months, one Bitcoin halving and a couple of institutions later, the industry sees a resurgence in interest brought about by Bitcoin hitting and breaking the psychological all-time high at $20,000 and reaching a new one of $42,000.

What is the 2020 Year in Review?

BitPinas sought the opinion of key crypto and blockchain leaders/influencers in the Philippines and abroad on what they think about 2020 in general and what they look forward to in 2021.

Gabby Dizon is the founder of Yield Guild Games, which is, from the words of League of Kingdoms: “an intriguing project spearheading the “Play-to-Earn” revolution on the blockchain gaming space.”

Yield Guild Games

Yield Guild Games

Gabby: Yield Guild Games (YGG) is a play-to-earn gaming guild that aggregates players that are interested in play-to-earn blockchain games and helps them to earn money from these games. We are starting players in Axie Infinity (which is where our core community is from), but are also looking at other games such as League of Kingdoms, Formula 1 Delta Time, and more. We invest in NFTs and lend them out to our players so that we can earn yield from these games, and distribute them to our guild members in the form of a DAO (in the near future).

Personal Highlight.

A personal highlight in 2020 was helping fellow Filipinos survive the lockdown brought upon by Covid by having them play Axie Infinity and earn SLP. This shows that blockchain games can appeal to a mass market and help them earn money from a blockchain-based economy, and impact real lives.

On PH Crypto Developments

The Philippine economy is now more globally connected to the rest of the crypto industry. Because of DeFi and blockchain games, the opportunity to earn crypto is now truly global for Filipinos, and not only related to cryptocurrency trading.

On Operational Changes

We’ve always operated in a remote-first environment, so the adjustment to the pandemic was relatively minimal for us. We ditched our office and committed to going 100% remote.

2021 Crypto Prediction

2021 is when crypto products in NFTs and Defi will truly reach the mass market – the application layer is now good enough that normal users will start interacting with dapps not fully knowing that they are blockchain applications. We still have a long way to go, but the battleground has now moved from infrastructure to consumer applications.

Looking Forward

I am looking forward to play-to-earn onboarding millions of players into the blockchain space and earning money from this new, digital-first economy.

[…] Arianna Simpson, General Partner at Andreessen Horowitz said it hopes to support the thriving play-to-earn community and help accelerate the adoption of play-to-earn games. YGG, Simpson said, is at the center of play-to-earn, the model where most of the value generated by playing a game goes back to the player rather than to the gaming platforms. “Thanks to the vision and dedication of the YGG team, this paradigm shift is growing quickly — yet we think we’re just starting to glimpse what’s possible in this realm,” Simpson added.
