Accenture, Microsoft, and Avanade aim to solve the challenges of identity faced by 1.1 billion people around the globe. They develop a blockchain-based identity system that gets rid of the need of a centralized entity to verify identity.

ID2020

ID2020 is a prototype database running on the blockchain. It allows multiple parties such as hospitals, law enforcement, etc to access the same data in a highly secure manner. To keep it simple, ID2020 gives you the power of consent as to when or to whom will you share your personal data. It removes the need for a central authority to identify a person.

“People without a documented identity suffer by being excluded from modern society. Our prototype is personal, private and portable, empowering individuals to access and share appropriate information when convenient and without the worry of using or losing paper documentation.” – Mr. David Treat, Managing Director, Accenture Global Blockchain Business

ID2020 Use Case

Global Use Case

Refugees from all over the world, especially those who are in war-torn areas don’t have time to get their personal documents because they need to leave their home immediately. All they want to do is move out of danger. This is where ID2020 can come in. With its biometrics system and its Unique Identity Service Platform, it can help undocumented refugees with a personal identity record that they can use to get assistance whenever they need it.

ID2020 has currently helped 1.3 million refugees in Asia, Africa, and the Carribean.

Local Use Case

Some people living in far-flung areas do not have legal identity documentation. Lack of legal documents deprives people of education, health care, and even voting rights. With ID2020, identity issues are solved, and this will help them receive proper support from the government, access to health care, etc.

Thoughts

It will be great news if ID2020 is integrated in the Philippines. I’m not just talking about large scale projects but also small scale. When you apply for a job, some firms get the original copy of your birth certificate. This means that you have to go back to NSO, line up, and pay to secure a new original copy. With ID2020, you just need to give them permission to access your personal information without the need of submitting a paper document.

There are a lot of use cases for this great innovation. Just in case you want to watch ID2020 video, You can click here. You can also check the official ID2020 website here.
