LinkedIn Study Shows Blockchain as a Rising Skill in APAC Region

June 25, 2019 – Human resource and social networking platform LinkedIn reveals in a study that “blockchain” is a rising skill in the Asia Pacific Region. In fact, some of the countries in Asia listed blockchain as one of their top in-demand skill.
In its Future of Skills 2019, LinkedIn notes that professionals with the “blockchain” skill help set up and manage distributed and decentralized public ledgers. Examples of occupations which have these skills are “blockchain developer”, “chief technology officer” and “consultant”.
LinkedIn listed down as to which “rising skill” is prevalent in a particular country. Blockchain is the no. 1 rising skill in Singapore and Hong Kong while it is no. 3 in China, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Japan.
While blockchain can help in the financial industry, LinkedIn highlights how it disrupts other industries as well.
“Online education uses blockchain to securely identify students, while logistic companies can keep track of goods. In advertising, blockchain keeps track of ad space bought by programs, ensuring no overlap and improving transparency.”
A survey in 2017 revealed that 88% of banks in the Asia Pacific Region believes blockchain is important to the industry’s future. LinkedIn noted how governments in APAC are supportive of blockchain, such as when the Monetary Authority of Singapore is revealed to be exploring blockchain for conducting inter-bank payments.
The Philippine government is one of the few countries in the world with guidelines for virtual currencies, cryptocurrencies made possible by blockchain. More than that, the Department of Budget have looked into blockchain for its procurement of supplies while the Department of Information Communications and Technology (DICT) have looked at the role of blockchain to develop the country’s cybersecurity policy.
More recently, DICT and the Department of Trade and Industry has partnered with blockchain firm Monsoon to explore blockchain’s potential for ease of doing business in the Philippines.

Unsurprisingly, blockchain-centric companies have usecases for the skills mentioned above. For example, companies trying to disrupt finance through blockchain will need a compliance officer to make sure it is in full compliance will all national and international laws pertaining to the industry. Companies trying to disrupt, for example, the farming industry, via blockchain will need to make sure that their solutions are relevant to its target market through proper marketing materials and user experience design.
