The blockchain is set to disrupt a number of industries by cutting the middleman and making transactions and supply chain more efficient.

Mr. Emerson Fonseca, NEM Philippines Head, shares to ANC’s The World Tonight how it can help the government, especially during elections.

Blockchain for Elections

“If you’re going to vote someone then we can see it real time, the tally will be recorded in the blockchain real time, and anyone can access it. There’s no way for them to edit.” – Mr. Emerson Fonseca, NEM Philippines Head

The blockchain technology is decentralized. For every block, there are “chains” of information, thus creating a chain. Elections in the Philippines are often muddled with controversy. Since a record on the blockchain is immutable, no one will be able to change it.

Using this technology can be a big step in making the Philippine elections more transparent and faster.

Blockchain Use Case for Land Registry and Education

Aside from voting, Mr. Fonseca noted that another good use case is in land registration and education.

“If we’re going to notarize the land titles into the blockchain, it’s going to be very hard for them to edit or tamper the information. If there will be some disasters that can happen like floods, we can still pull out the record out of the blockchain.”

The same goes in the education sector. By notarizing diplomas and certificates in the blockchain, there is zero chance of tampering and faking the documents. This is a notable problem when submitting resumes. Verifying the school’s listed on someone’s resume can take time. If the record is on the blockchain, the access to such records can be done immediately.

Mr. Emerson Fonseca is the head of NEM Philippines. He is also the CEO and President of Coin Sessions PH that provides talks and sessions about blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies.
