September 10, 2019 – The Stellar Development Foundation reveals it is going to airdrop 2 billion XLM tokens via messaging service Keybase over the course of 20 months, making it the largest XLM airdrop in history.
As part of the foundation’s aim to “deliver Lumens (XLM) to the world”, all users need to do is have an “authenticated Keybase account.” Via information on the App Store, Keybase is a secure messaging platform where you can write securely and send messages. Using the app, anyone can send Stellar even those without a Keybase account. According to a message shared to Coindesk, once a user is authenticated, the “XLM will appear in your wallet automatically, every month” as long as the airdrop continues.
In a blog post, Keybase started with how they like Stellar’s cryptocurrency technology:
- Transactions take only 5 seconds
- Transactions cost a tiny fraction of a penny
- Does not waste too much energy
- Stellar’s “path payments”.
To be eligible for the airdrop this month, one has to be 1) Keybase account holder before 9/9/19 and connect their Github or Hackernews account that was registered before 9/9/19.
It is important to note that Keybase is one of the few messaging apps that will work with already existing cryptocurrency instead of building their own. Facebook is set to create Libra, which will first be compatible with their own slew of messaging apps (Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp) while Telegram plans to launch Telegram Open Network (TON) next month.
