Students from University of San Carlos (USC) Cebu Wins at Hong Kong Blockchain Olympiad

Their project: “MediSure” is intended to add integrity to the pharmaceutical supply chain by leveraging blockchain as a way to detect and stop the spread of counterfeit drugs.

August 5, 2019 – Blockchain transforming healthcare integrity to the pharmaceutical supply chain by leveraging a way to detect and stop the spread of counterfeit drugs.

Last July 7, 2019, students from University of San Carlos (USC) Cebu won silver medal from 2019 International Blockchain Olympiad (IBCOL) at the Hong kong Science and Technology Parks, InnoCentre.

The students from USC are Jeremiah Valero, Louise Lumapas, and Rannzel Tongco, led and advised by their Professor Cris Militante. Their project: “MediSure” is a blockchain-based anti-drug counterfeiting platform. The blockchain project intended to add integrity to the pharmaceutical supply chain by leveraging blockchain as a way to detect and stop the spread of counterfeit drugs.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) together with the support of Philippine Consulate General in Hongkong, represented by Consul Sheila Monedero-Arnesto, served as witness to the Philippine team journey in the competition encouraging the team to continue developing their ideas in science and technology while proactive contribution to the country’s sustainable development. The sole Philippine Team bested 30 other teams from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Canada, Mainland China, the United States, and Estonia.

Students from the University of San Carlos in Cebu came to close bagging the title of 2019 by placing 2nd in the Olympiad.

In the two-day Olympiad, organized by the City University of Hongkong – College of Business, the Hongkong Science Park, and HongKong Blockchain Society, the theme was multi-disciplinary design and building competition wherein students from all over the world solve real-world challenges with private, secure, and decentralized applications. Its aim is to promote the value of blockchain in the society as a substantial technology more than its application in cryptocurrencies.
