Following the launch of its GCrypto feature and “House of Ohlala” non-fungible token (NFT) collection, fintech firm GCash introduced its newest metaverse initiative, the GCrypto NFT Hub.

The website, which is set to allow Filipino artists to showcase their digital art to a wider audience and enable users to explore and purchase NFT art from local artists, was inaugurated during the “House of Ohlala” launch held at The Astbury in Makati and hosted by NFT enthusiast Mikael Daez.

The event was attended by members of the NFT and art community, including several media personalities and influencers such as Kokoy de Santos, Buboy Villar, Analyn Barro, KC Montero, Chezka Gonzales, Jared Dillinger, Patty Tiu, and more. Mark Nunez, the head of partnerships for crypto and web3, and Neil Trinidad, the chief marketing officer of GCash, were also present.

At the event, attendees were said to have set up their GCrypto wallets and were among the first to acquire an Ohlala NFT collectible.

“Through the GCrypto NFT Hub, we hope to provide Filipino artists a platform to bring their digital art to a wider audience, while also enabling more Filipinos access to buy their first NFT art,” Jong Layug, GCash Head of Wealth Management, stated.

Also, the launch of the GCrypto NFT Hub, according to GCash, was made possible by the firm’s partnership with bluechip NFT launchpad Scarletbox.io and NFT collections Superordinary Friends x TRNZ and Distort Monsters.

Last March, GCash collaborated with ScarletBox.io to make National Artist Larry Alcala’s characters available to a broader audience through NFTs. This collaboration allows GCash users to buy Larry Alcala NFTs directly, making his legacy more accessible to a wider audience and introducing his works to those who may not be familiar with them.

To showcase NFTs made by both established and emerging Filipino artists, the hub is expected to feature ‌artworks by contemporary artist Bitto and national artists Botong Francisco and Vicente Manansala.

House of Ohlala

GCash has partnered with NFT marketplace Likha and art gallery Vinyl on Vinyl to release their first NFT collection called “House of Ohlala.”

During the event, Layug expressed excitement over the partnership with renowned sculptor and painter Reen Barrera for his debut NFT collection as they launched the GCrypto NFT Hub.

The collectibles, consisting of 1,000 NFTs, can be purchased on the Likha NFT marketplace for 100 MATIC each, and buyers will have the chance to receive exclusive prizes and benefits. Holders may win one of four Ohlala statues every quarter, while owners of the 10 editions of 1/1 NFTs will receive a free Giclee print of their digital collectible. Moreover, GCash trait holders will get a special artwork drop.

Barrera’s “House of Ohlala” NFT collection centers around his well-known character, Ohlala, who represents a subtle critique of social stratification. The character is depicted with a canvas cloth wrapped around her head, signifying that every individual, regardless of their financial status, has the potential to shape their own destiny, and its face is adorned with various symbols and patterns, inspired by the phrase “it’s written all over your face.”

The collection is also said to be his first-ever NFT venture as an artist.

“I personally use GCash on a daily basis, and for sure, a lot of Filipinos also trust the app for their hard-earned money. To acquire NFT, you need a digital currency. And what’s the most trusted e-wallet app? It’s GCash. For someone like me who’s afraid to venture into something new like NFTs, I would be at ease knowing that I’m with a company I trust,” Barrera shared.

Recently, Nunez announced that GCrypto is now available to all users following its public release on April 23.

GCrypto and “House of Ohlala” were recently highlighted during the Bitcoin, Beer, and Bitstories crypto community gathering at Draper Startup House Manila on April 27.
