  • Filipino artist Bjorn Calleja spoke at a panel discussion in Singapore on January 8th, 2023, where he discussed the importance of community in the NFT art space.
  • Calleja shared his learnings as an artist in the NFT space, which is to hold on to the story and inspiration of the art alone and not to lose track of it.

“Community is like a family that watches you grow, or from the beginning until you can make it stand on your own legs. So, yeah, that’s been one, but for me, it’s just the same practice.”

This is the statement made by Filipino artist Bjorn Calleja, the Philippines’ representative on the global stage at the S.E.A. Focus event during Singapore Art Week, in a panel discussion with the theme “Tezos Presents: Come Together – Building Communities in the NFT Art Space,” on January 8, 2023.

“The sense of community, mostly for (my) fellow artists, people help push each other to grow and cultivate the proper practices. (We) learn from each other. We’re able to share our experiences,” Calleja added.

According to the Filipino artist, being an artist in the web3 space has given him a global audience, citing his experience that when he was doing art exhibits in traditional shows in Manila, the audience was limited.

This is not the first time that Calleja’s talent has gone international. In May 2022, the multi-disciplinary talent was the lone Filipino artist whose work was exhibited during the pioneering interactive art exhibit entitled “NFTs + The Ever-Evolving World of Art” at Art Basel Hong Kong.

This is also not the first time that Calleja has highlighted the importance of having a community in the NFT art industry. During Track 3 of the first day of “GeckoCon: The Decentralized Future,” the FEU alumnus stressed that aside from educating others about the blockchain and about NFTs, it is also important to teach others how to start creating NFTs and start their careers as NFT artists.

On the other hand, Marissa Trew, the moderator of the discussion, admitted that one of the challenges of web3, being on the internet, is accessibility:

“So there it is not a perfect system, but there does exist the opportunity to really interact with almost everyone who has got a connection online.”

To conclude the discussion, Calleja shared his learnings as an artist in the NFT space, which is to hold on to the story and inspiration of the art alone:

“Don’t follow the phase of the space (as) it goes very uncontrollable, and you lose path of it.

With the art, I believe that the grander the intention, the stronger the foundation is. So you (can strive) whatever the market comes.”
