Michelle Dee, Miss Universe Philippines 2023, announced the launch of a non-fungible token (NFT) to benefit her autism advocacy foundation, Global Spectrum Initiative. She made the announcement at a press conference for the upcoming Philippine Blockchain Week 2023 (PBW 2023), held on September 7 at The Hub, Marriott Hotel in Pasay City.

The news was initially announced by PBW convenor, Donald Lim, who also shared that the NFTs are “creatively painted”.

Dee described the tokens as “advocacy NFTs,” meaning they will not be sold but will instead be donated to benefit individuals within the autism spectrum.

“For the utilities, I will be giving you a little bit of a teaser… it will have real world utilities as well as tech savvy utilities. And of course, I am in partner with a lot of very exciting partnerships that are also opening up the floor and opportunities to release it.”

She then expressed her gratitude for the support of web3 industry leaders and she noted that she is also backed by “people who are passionate about serving, helping, and creating opportunities for those who need those resources.”

“As you all know, autism is a lifelong mission for me– I have two autistic brothers, one older and one younger—so it is something I have been advocating for all of my life. And I know that the power of blockchain technology, with the power of web3, I know it’s going to take over the world and I just want to be one step ahead and create opportunities for those who really need it. In a world full of abled people no one deserves to get left behind.”

Global Spectrum Initiative

Dee stated that the Global Spectrum Initiative (GSI) is a foundation that is “very driven to helping individuals on the autism spectrum.”

“We are one step closer from turning an idea into reality. Utilizing the power of technology to provide opportunities for individuals on the spectrum and so much more,” GSI wrote in its Instagram post

Its board of directors include prominent individuals in the country’s web3 industry including Lim, Mark Gorriceta (Managing Partner, Gorriceta Law), and Paul Soliman (CEO, Bayanichain). 

The board also have Gail Santos, Annette Gozon Valdes (President, GMA Films), Jonas Antonio Gaffud (Co-Founder, Aces and Queens), Sam Versoza (President, Frontrow Enterprise), and Mona Magno Veluz (National President, Autism Society Philippines).

The PBW press conference aimed to showcase the flagship event and introduce the headline speakers for the conference. The Philippine Blockchain Week is set to run from September 19-21, 2023 at the Marriott Grand Ballroom in Newport World Resorts, Manila.

The presscon featured a panel discussion with the people leading the PBW including Donald Lim, Michelle Dee, Chezka Gonzales (Philippine Blockchain Technology Inc. and Blockchain Council of the Philippines), Janelle Barreto (PBTI.), Aspen Sanez (BlockchainSpace), Tryke Gutierrez and Tyrone Bretanna (Tier One), John Aguilar (The Final Pitch), Bernard Maybituin (Lumina Events Management), Dexter Chan (Smart Telecom), and Denise Tee (KlimaDAO). 

PBW is supported by government departments, including the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT)
