  • The first “Building on the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) Blockchain: A Hands-on Workshop for Bicolano Developers” was successfully held last month in Daraga, Albay, aimed at helping Bicolano developers understand blockchain technology and build decentralized applications (dapps).
  • The workshop was organized through a partnership between the Manila branch of the blockchain network ICP and Bicol-based SparkLearn EdTech, with other Bicolano-led web3 entities and organizations also present to support it.
  • ICP Manila business leader Nelson Lumbres also hinted that this is just the first of a series of workshops that the firm and SparkLern EdTech will organize.

Aiming to help Bicolano developers understand blockchain technology and learn how to build decentralized applications (dapps), a workshop called “Building on the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) Blockchain: A Hands-on Workshop for Bicolano Developers” successfully commenced on March 11, 2023, at the Sunshine Skills Training and Development Center in Daraga, Albay—the first of many drafted seminars to happen in the Bicol Region.

The workshop is the result of a partnership between the Manila branch of the blockchain network Internet Computer Protocol (ICP) and Bicol-based SparkLearn EdTech, an online upskilling platform for blockchain technology and web3 education. Apart from the two, other Bicolano-led web3 entities and organizations were also present to support the workshop, such as Bicol IT, Ownly, SparkPoint, and MetaSaga Warriors.

During the workshop, organizers introduced the ICP blockchain to developers, its potential, and the reasons why it is a suitable platform for developing dapps. For instance, the ICP blockchain, a publicly accessible blockchain that is intended to be secure, scalable, and efficient, has a distinctive architecture that enables it to accommodate a limitless number of smart contract canisters and execute them at web speed.

As per Nelson Lumbres, the business leader of ICP-Manila, what they organized is a “first step” to the development of the ICP blockchain, hinting that the workshop is just the “first of a series of workshops.”

Moreover, Emilio Canessa, Marketing and Special Projects Manager at the DFINITY Foundation, also presented the advantages of utilizing the ICP blockchain for building purposes through a virtual platform. He provided information about the most recent developments and features of the ICP blockchain, including the integration of cross-chain Bitcoin (ckBTC) and the Social Network Service (SNS).

In a statement, SparkLearn EdTech highlighted one of the significant benefits of the ICP blockchain: its ability to support smart contract canisters—self-contained units of code that can be autonomously deployed and executed, making them more efficient compared to conventional smart contracts.

“Canisters are self-contained units of code that can be deployed and executed independently, making them more efficient than traditional smart contracts. Canisters can also be composed together to create more complex dapps, and they can communicate among themselves using the ICP’s messaging system,” the statement read.

According to Lumbres, the ICP blockchain provides developers with the advantage of low to almost nonexistent gas fees in the development process, which is not available in other blockchain networks, emphasizing the significance of having complete control over the developed applications.

“This hands-on workshop designed by ICP-Manila and SparkLearn EdTech is an excellent opportunity for Bicolano developers to learn about the ICP blockchain and how to create decentralized applications on it. The workshop also provided participants with valuable experience and equipped them with the skills they needed to contribute to the growth of the ICP blockchain ecosystem. Through this workshop, Bicolano developers can be at the forefront of the blockchain revolution and help shape the future of the technology,” SparkLearn EdTech concluded.
