- Keanu Reeves thinks that artificial intelligence (AI) and NFT digital art are impressive, but we need to look beyond the spectacle and consider what is truly valuable.
In a recent interview with Wired to promote his new film “John Wick 4,” Keanu Reeves emphasized that he is amazed by the idea of blockchain technology, adding that cryptocurrencies are “amazing tools for exchanges and distribution of resources.”
Reeves on blockchain and crypto
“I think the principle, the ideas behind an independent currency, are amazing. To pooh-pooh crypto, or the volatility of cryptocurrency, it’s only going to make it better in terms of how it’s safeguarded,” Reeves explained.
In a separate interview, the John Wick star shared that he has been holding crypto since December 2021 because his friend bought it for him.
Thoughts on AI and NFT
Meanwhile, when asked about his movie, “The Matrix,” where speculations about the future of AI were formed, Reeves responded that “people are growing up with these tools: we’re listening to music already that’s made by AI in the style of Nirvana; there’s NFT digital art.”
“It’s this sensorium. It’s spectacle… a system of control and manipulation. We’re on our knees looking at cave walls and seeing the projections, and we’re not having the chance to look behind us. Or to the side,” he stressed.
Moreover, Reeves highlighted that it is cool to have machines behind the AI industry, adding that “but there’s a corporatocracy behind it that’s looking to control those things. Culturally, socially, we’re gonna be confronted by the value of real, or the nonvalue.”
In June last year, the Matrix star launched a web3 charitable organization named Futurverse Foundation with Fluf World NFT and the actor’s partner, Alexandra Grant. Reeves and Grant are currently advisers to the foundation to “help encourage the growth of the metaverse.”
As per Reeves, the foundation was actually Grant’s idea, and he just showed his full support:
“I helped set up the launch. We’re trying to take this technology that people are interested in and give opportunities to artists with different viewpoints.”
