In a surprising tweet, the world’s richest person so far, Elon Musk, announced on July 12, 2023, the formation of xAI, a new AI company that aims to “understand the true nature of the universe” by developing the “theory of everything” for large neural networks.
Introducing xAI: Elon Musk’s New AI Venture
xAI was first hinted at by Musk on April 28, 2023, when he said in an interview with Fox News that he wanted to create a “maximum truth-seeking AI.” He first wanted to call it “TruthGPT,” a “non-woke” chatbot that would face the ChatGPT, which Musk described as a “woke chatbot.”

“If it tried to understand the true nature of the universe, that’s actually the best thing that I can come up with from an AI safety standpoint.I think it is going to be pro-humanity from the standpoint that humanity is just much more interesting than not-humanity,” the billionaire explained.
The Team Behind xAI: Pioneers of AI Breakthroughs
Alongside Musk will be Igor Babuschkin, Manuel Kroiss, Yuhuai (Tony) Wu, Christian Szegedy, Jimmy Ba, Toby Pohlen, Ross Nordeen, Kyle Kosic, Greg Yang, Guodong Zhang, and Zihang Dai.
According to xAI’s website, they are known for working on and leading the development of some of the largest breakthroughs in the field including AlphaStar, AlphaCode, Inception, Minerva, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4.
Currently, xAI’s team adviser is Dan Hendrycks, who currently serves as the director of the Center for AI Safety, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization that promotes the safe development and deployment of AI across different industries.

And since xAI is headed by Musk, does this mean that it is a member of the billionaire’s group of companies? xAI said that it is a separate company from X Corp., but it is open to working closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies “to make progress towards our mission.”
As of this writing, xAI is looking for experienced engineers and researchers to join its team as members of its technical staff.
Elon Musk: A Constant Force in the AI Space
The billionaire is not new anymore in the AI industry. He started entering the space in 2018 when he co-founded OpenAI, the developer behind the popular chatbot ChatGPT.
However, three years later, he left the AI firm because, for him, there was a “potential conflict of interest” with Tesla, his company that targets to develop a self-driving product, and Neuralink, his company that develops brain-computer interfaces that can connect humans and machines.

The AI Race: xAI Versus ChatGPT
Then in 2021, the public was shocked when Musk criticized OpenAI’s chatbot GPT-3.5 for being biased and untrustworthy, adding that he wants to create a “maximum truth-seeking AI” that can understand the nature of the universe, which turned out to be xAI in today’s era.
Musk even signed earlier this year several open letters that called for the ethical and responsible development of AI and has also donated millions of dollars to support AI research and safety initiatives.
