PUBG Developer Partners With Solana Labs To Launch Blockchain Games
Krafton, the South Korean gaming giant and developer of popular video game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), is set to venture into crypto by partnering with blockchain startup Solana Labs to develop blockchain games.
“KRAFTON will continuously see ways to work closely with blockchain companies like Solana Labs as we stride towards establishing our Web 3.0 ecosystem,” – Park Hyungchul, Krafton Lead of Web3 Roundtable
In an announcement last March 23, the game developer stated that it had signed a business agreement with Solana Labs which will be a “long-term cooperative relationship for the development and operation of blockchain and NFT-based games and services.” This meant that the new business plan of the Krafton now includes the creation of token economies to power GameFi (gaming-finance) experiences to build its own Web3 offerings.
“As one of the best global high-performance blockchain with strength in high speed and low fees, Solana represents the best of the Web 3.0 ecosystem and its technologies. Through this cooperation, Krafton will acquire the insight needed to accelerate its investment in and output of blockchain-based experiences.” Park added.
Through this recent partnership, Solana sees this as a potential push to other leading blockchain game developers to consider using Solana as their development chain as more companies are integrating these new technologies in their business models.
“We are seeing gamers increasingly seek out on-chain games and gaming companies who respond quickly to this demand will set themselves up well for ongoing success.” – Johnny Lee, head of Games Business Development at Solana Labs
Solana Labs is the company that developed the Solana blockchain, which is currently setting its mark in the space as more developers adopt it for decentralized finance projects.
Following the adoption of crypto, blockchain, play-to-earn, and NFTs, different game developers and entities have various take on the trend.
Last year, gaming giant Ubisoft also formally announced its intention to develop play-to-earn NFTs. In December, Ubisoft launched the Ubisoft Quartz platform, a platform for its in-game NFT items. The platform is the first step in the video game firm’s aim for developing a true metaverse built on the Tezos blockchain, an open-source blockchain system. On the other hand, Valve, video game developer, PC game store and mother company of Steam, bans all blockchain games that feature NFT or cryptocurrencies on its video game digital distribution service. Whale its rival, Epic Games stated that it is open to letting games that use blockchain technology and NFTs onto its PC store.
