Popular play-to-earn game Axie Infinity experienced another attack on its Discord server earlier on Wednesday, May 18, via the bot MEE6. However, the MEE6 team denied that the attack happened because of a vulnerability on their end.
The hackers breached Axie Infinity’s Discord server through the MEE6 bot which they used to add permissions to a fake Jihoz account (Jihoz, of Jeff Zirlin is the company’s growth lead) and later issued a fake announcement regarding a mint. Fortunately, the developers were able to delete the phony message and got rid of the compromised bot.
MEE6 is a popular discord bot mainly used for automating roles and messages and is used by numerous crypto projects. Other crypto-related servers also kicked out the bot to ensure their safety.
While Axie Infinity’s developers guaranteed that they have already taken down the breached MEE6 bot from the main server, they still warned that users may still see the fake message. They noted that to delete all traces of the fake message, Axie Infinity users must restart their Discord.
On the other hand, the official MEE6 Discord support channel has denied the allegations of a hack and claimed that they have verified with their engineers and didn’t see any unusual activity.
In November 2021, Axie Infinity’s Discord server was also compromised when the hacker took over a privileged Discord Bot at the game’s server and sent a fake announcement on all of the server’s announcement channels regarding an exclusive sale. Also just last March, the play-to-earn game was involved with that is considered the “greatest heist in crypto” when North Korean hacking group Lazarus exploited Axie Infinity’s Ronin bridge and Katana decentralized exchange for 173,600 ETH and 25.5 million USD Coin (USDC) which are worth a combined $625 million.
