Florin “Pilo” Hilbay, former Solicitor General and current Dean of Silliman College of Law, expands his crypto endeavors with the upcoming launch of his podcast, “Basta Bitcoin.”

Availability of the Basta Bitcoin Podcast

The Basta Bitcoin Podcast will be available for streaming on YouTube and Spotify. The specific channel will be announced on launch day.

According to a post on his Facebook page, the first episode is set to be released soon, though the exact date has not been specified.

The podcast, presented in Taglish, aims to enhance Filipinos’ understanding of the history of money and its relationship with the economy, politics, and freedom. Hilbay noted that each episode would run for about 30 minutes.

“I sincerely believe we are in the midst of a monetary transition, a pivotal event in our civilization,” Hilbay explained.

“Nasa gitna tayo ng isang napakaimportanteng event sa ating sibilisasyon. ‘Yun ‘yung transition from one monetary system to another. Sa tingin ko, dapat pag-aralan na natin siya dahil kung mababago ‘yung monetary system, mababago rin ‘yung legal system, pati na rin ‘yung pag-aaral ng economics, politics, at history ng money, banking, at finance.”

One of the topics for the upcoming episode will be the Bitcoin Savings Program.

New Book on Bitcoin

This year, Hilbay published a book titled “Introduction to Bitcoin: Navigating the Future of Money.” The book explores the concept of money, focusing on its origins and design rather than wealth generation. It also provides a historical overview of money’s traits and their implications for society.

Its central argument posits that Bitcoin represents the epitome of sound money, addressing the challenges humanity faces and heralding significant changes.

In 2023, Hilbay released a book about Bitcoin in collaboration with Silliman University. Following the book launch, he conducted weekly lectures at Silliman to familiarize the community with the 21st-century monetary network.

Hilbay is the key speaker of this website’s meetup #CryptoPH Conversations, held on April 19, 2024.

In April 2023, Hilbay described Bitcoin as “the only real money for the 21st century” during his speech at the first-ever Bitcoin Island Retreat. He criticized those who fail to recognize Bitcoin’s significance as “still living in the 20th century” and actively advocated for its adoption in the Philippines.

A month later, he emphasized the importance of understanding Bitcoin during a lecture at the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Law, noting its complexity and the need for a multidisciplinary approach.

In August, Hilbay announced the opening of Sats Cafe at Silliman University, believed to be the first on-campus cafe that accepts only satoshi, the smallest unit of Bitcoin, for payment. The cafe’s menu items are priced between 2,500 and 4,500 sats.

Hilbay also supports local efforts to earn and save in Bitcoin.
