October 23, 2018. NEM Philippines Head, Mr. Emerson Fonseca, shared that the foundation is busy building soldiers of blockchain developers to solve the lack of blockchain developers in the space.
During an intimate NEM Partners Event, Mr. Fonseca gave a brief introduction as to how NEM Philippines is moving to solve the major shortage of blockchain developers in the world. He said that the foundation has teamed up with Union Bank. Through the bank’s “Blockchain Institute”, aside from learning blockchain, cadets will also be taught real-life use-cases and be encouraged to solve problems using the blockchain.

In addition to Union Bank, he also cited Ateneo’s AMBERlab (Ateneo-MediXserve Blockchain Education and Research Laboratory), the first blockchain and research lab in the Philippines. NEM also gave a talk about blockchain at the Lyceum of the Philippines.
Mr. Richard Tiu, Strategic Alliance & Partnership Director of NEM Philippines also stressed the importance of having developers who know blockchain.
“There are great ideas, great concept but no developers. It’s like you’re making shoes that nobody could use.” – Mr. Richard Tiu, Strategic Alliance & Partnership Director, NEM Philippines
Mr. Tiu still believes that the country has the best opportunity for blockchain. At present, the country has 73,000 IT-related graduates. Also, the country’s English familiarity is also a boost when working in the industry.
The Strategic Alliance & Partnership Director also stated that CEZA, Ateneo, and Lyceum were very open about the idea of blockchain education.
“I explained my vision about the advocacy of education, … He [CEZA administrator Raul Lambino] agreed to do an MOU right away. It’s like Ateneo and Lyceum, they just, go.” – Mr. Richard Tiu, Strategic Alliance & Partnership Director, NEM Philippines
Also present during the event is Mr. Jeff McDonald, who is one of the Founding Board Members of NEM.io. He visited the Philippines and helped the foundation spread the word about blockchain by actively participating in NEM events, especially during the visits to local schools.
A sneak peek of his exclusive interview with BitPinas, Mr. McDonald said that he is “super bullish and excited about CEZA”.
