  • The profile picture NFT collection of National Artist Larry Alcala will be more easily accessible to a wider audience through ScarletBox’s partnership with GCash.
  • First introduced by ScarletBox last year, the NFT collection features various character rarities and collaborations with popular NFT projects, and collectors can also enjoy exclusive merchandise drops.
  • ScarletBox is also offering a full-service concierge to guide collectors, especially first-time NFT owners.

ScarletBox.io, the first Blue-Chip Fine Arts NFT Launchpad in Asia, is bringing NFTs of National Artist Larry Alcala’s characters to a wider audience with its partnership with mobile payments platform GCash. GCash’s 77 million users can purchase Larry Alcala NFTs directly, thus making Alcala’s legacy accessible to a wider audience, bridging the gap between generations and introducing his works to those who may not have grown up with them.

Who is Larry Alcala?

Famous for his weekly Sunday series “Slice of Life,” Lauro “Larry” Zarate Alcala, Sr. captured the hearts of Filipino families in the 1980s and 1990s as his illustrations depicted everyday life in the country. Filipinos would be looking forward to the Sunday newspaper, especially because he gave readers the task of finding his image hiding in plain sight in the cartoon. It was a common sight to see a group of Pinoys huddled together looking for “Larry” in the newspaper.

In 2008, the Order of National Artists Award Secretariat gave Alcala the National Artist for Visual Arts Award.

Alcala highlighted the lives of ordinary Filipinos through his comics as an artist of 56 years and has created over 500 characters, 20 comic strips, six movies, two murals, and 15,000 published pages. He was also a retired Fine Arts professor at the University of the Philippines, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting in the 1950s.

Aside from Slice of Life (1980-1987), some of his other known works include Siopawman (1972-1983, 2002) and Mang Ambo (1963-1972, 1993-1998).

Alcala successfully launched 17 individual exhibitions in 17 years in six different countries, received multiple awards like the Pamana Award for Cartooning in 1991, and served as the President of the Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas for a decade.

Immortalized on the Blockchain

First hinted at by ScarletBox in the second half of 2022, Alcala’s characters are now preserved on the blockchain, embodying different personalities that reflect the humor of his iconic works. The Larry Alcala NFT collection is an exclusive collaboration with popular NFT projects and artists, namely Bored Punks of Society, Planktoons, Distort Monsters, Black Eyed Freaks, Mustachioverse by Ownly, and Bjorn Calleja.

To purchase the Larry Alcala NFTs, buyers can visit ScarletBox’s platform and choose from multiple options, including cash, GCrypto, credit card, or bank transfer. Collectors can also view the project here.

Each PFP NFT is randomly assigned and will feature different rarities, urging collectors to look forward to which Larry Alcala NFT they will collect. The rarest of which is the Diamond Rare NFT, which features Larry Alcala’s profile face.

ScarletBox wants to make sure that collectors will not only get the NFT, so they can also look forward to exclusive merchandise drops, mugs, notebooks, and tumblers, to name a few. In this way, collectors can have an overall enhanced experience because they did not just receive the NFT (which is digital) but also a physical item as well.

ScarletBox and GCash’s GCrypto

The launch of Larry Alcala’s NFTs is a precursor to the wider availability of GCash’s crypto offering, called “GCrypto” in the future. GCash has been partnering with NFT communities and projects such as ScarletBox to ensure GCrypto will be on top of mind once it is available to all users.

While for ScarletBox, collectors who wish to own the Larry Alcala NFTs can acquire them easily via GCash/GCrypto. They can also request for guidance through its full-service concierge in case they are also interested in the Founder’s NFT or the Larry Alcala private sale.
