[Update!] Someone wins 1 million worth of bitcoin from Maya!

Several users of Maya app have shared screenshots on Facebook and Twitter that they have received free bitcoin on their accounts. This, despite not buying BTC or any crypto within their Maya app recently.

Upon checking, team members of BitPinas have also received free bitcoin from Maya. This publication already reached out to the Maya team for comments but has yet to receive a response about their free bitcoin airdrop. Airdrop is a crypto term referring to the process of distributing crypto en masse to users.

As per the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are a type of digital currency created by a community of online users, stored in electronic wallets, and generally transacted online.

Bitcoin is the first successful cryptocurrency, developed by an anonymous creator named Satoshi Nakamoto. Initially created to facilitate online transactions without using a digital version of cash, bitcoin is also now viewed as an asset class capable of keeping its value over time, just like gold.

A common way to earn some profit from bitcoin is to buy it while the value is low and sell it once the value increases.

However, while its value generally maintains an upward trend since it was created in 2009, its wild volatility on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis is a concern to short-term traders and investors. That’s why as a type of investment, those who want to buy, sell, or trade bitcoin are warned and advised to only invest money they are prepared to lose and always do their research.

For those starting in crypto, Maya features a Beginner’s Guides in-app that will teach users how to get started and allows crypto to be purchased for as low as ₱1.

BitPinas was the first to report Maya’s crypto journey starting with an interview with Nick Wilwayco, the firm’s Head of Public Affairs and Communications, in December 2021, when she confirmed Maya’s plans for adding crypto to the app. Maya started offering the crypto feature to its users last April – where they enable customers to buy, sell, and hold crypto in just one app. Maya currently offers 15 cryptocurrencies, one of which is Bitcoin.
