  • Anito Legends, inspired by Filipino folklore, is set to be listed on the Epic Games Store following a successful chain migration, marking a significant milestone for the game.
  • Epic Games Store emphasizes the use of blockchain and NFT technology in the game, managed by Masayato Games, and advises players on the risks associated with cryptocurrency purchases.
  • A Game 7 report highlights challenges in the blockchain gaming industry, including halted game developments, and financial struggles for small studios. The report also noted an increase in chain migration.

Anito Legends has accomplished another milestone as it is set to be listed on Epic Games Store, one of the world’s largest video game digital distribution services. This was confirmed by Jayvee Fernandez, Co-Founder of Masayato Games, developers of the folklore-inspired web3 gaming title.

Anito Legends at Epic

As indicated on the game’s page on the Epic Game Store, the game’s availability is still listed as “Coming Soon” and an official release date has not yet been announced.

Anito Legends is a free-to-play game that offers optional interactions with blockchain, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and cryptocurrency. For the game’s lore, developer Masayato Games tapped award-winning horror writer Yvette Tan. Moreover, the game introduces $GINTO and $LARO tokens for in-app purchases, allowing players to acquire and own NFT assets like Anitos and equipment.

On the game’s page, Epic Games Store noted that the game is built on Blockchain and NFT technology, involving cryptocurrency. It highlighted that the publisher, Masayato Games, manages all transactions, in-game purchases, refunds, and customer support.

In addition, players are cautioned to conduct their research before buying cryptocurrency or digital assets, and purchases through third-party marketplaces are undertaken at the player’s risk.

Under the frequently-asked-questions (FAQs) tab, the game store clarified that the use of tokens is not mandatory for enjoying the game and while the game supports the Metamask wallet for blockchain-related features, it is not obligatory unless players want to engage with these aspects.

“Listing on the Epic Games store was a natural progression for the desktop version of Anito Legends. Before doing that, we wanted to make sure that our game was optimized to handle an influx of new players. From a listing standpoint we also had to check off some boxes.”

He also highlighted that transparency regarding blockchain-based gaming was of course essential to Epic Games, but that being free-to-play, without requiring NFT assets, was also a major advantage.

Chain Change

Anito Legends Moves to Polygon Blockchain From Binance Smart Chain

In October, Anito Legends successfully migrated to Polygon from the Binance Smart Chain. The migration was driven by the platform’s expanded partnership opportunities, particularly in the Philippines, where the gaming community is vibrant. According to the developers, new pools of $LARO and $GINTO were established on Polygon from BSC.

In this regard, a report from the decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) focused on blockchain gaming adoption Game 7 revealed that the industry has faced challenges this year. It noted that 157 games are either “halted” or otherwise stopped development and 43 titles halted in development in 2023.

Moreover, the report stated that financial struggles affected many small studios, particularly those established before 2021. Indie games make up the majority of the Web3 gaming sector, while the number of gaming-focused blockchain networks increased from 37 in 2022 to 53 in 2023, intensifying competition for developers.

In addition, Game 7 revealed that Ethereum’s mainnet and Polygon remain top choices for blockchain games, with an increasing trend of games migrating to Polygon, Immutable, and Arbitrum. Reasons for migration include scaling issues, lower costs, and concerns about market uncertainties. Some developers switched to gasless chains to enhance player engagement, while others created their blockchains for value capture and control over technical capabilities.

Anito Legends in 2022-2023

In February 2022, the game initiated closed beta testing sign-ups, offering participants the promise of receiving an Anito NFT on Mainnet upon the game’s official launch.  In the same month, Anito Legends also revealed that they had garnered 859 players, with 2,724 Anito NFTs already in use.

In June of this year, Masayato Games rolled out updates for the “late summer” event in the game, featuring new visuals, a fresh mechanic, additional Battle Pass missions, and enhanced rewards for competitive players. Additionally, the burning mechanism for $GINTO, known as the “Rite of Ipa-Alam,” commenced in July, aiming to foster balance within the gaming ecosystem.
