Philippine-based game development studio XOVOX Labs, part of The Sandbox Trusted Partner Studio Program, led an educational campaign for students and aspiring Metaverse creators. It offered hybrid classes, live workshops, and an online series for students and web3 enthusiasts. These efforts were part of a pre-event boot camp promoting one of The Sandbox’s Game Jams.

According to a media release, the firm offered hybrid classes for members of the web3 service provider guild NFTXStreet, live workshops at STI-Cubao and the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) Manila, and an online workshop series.

The NFTXStreet classes took place in mid-March, with participants preparing for The Sandbox Usbong Hiraya Game Jam.

On March 22, TIP Manila students attended a game workshop where they enhanced their skills using The Sandbox’s free no-code tools for asset creation and game design.

Further, XOVOX Labs noted that this initiative culminated in a boot camp to encourage participation in the SheInspires Game Jam, The Sandbox’s women-focused competition.

XOVOX Labs’ CEO Emmanuel Lorenzo “El” Bonuan expressed pride in students’ success in game jams, highlighting their skills and creativity.

“It is a source of immense pride to see students from our classes and workshops excel in these game jams. Their success not only demonstrates their newly acquired skills but also their ability to create impressive games under challenging conditions. I look forward to seeing more content from them, and watching their creative journey evolve in the Metaverse!”

Last year, XOVOX Labs became the first Filipino game studio to be accredited on The Sandbox Metaverse platform. As a recognized partner, they gain early access to The Sandbox’s content and increased visibility to brands and IPs interested in the Metaverse.

The Sandbox Game Jams

This year, metaverse platform The Sandbox hosted two significant game jams: Usbong Hiraya in March and SheInspires in April.

The prize pool for both competitions totaled 30,000 SAND and three LANDs, worth approximately ₱1,000,000 each at the time. Prizes varied based on placement, with the top three receiving SAND tokens, a 1×1 LAND parcel, and additional rewards for published entries.

Usbong Hiraya

Usbong Hiraya, co-organized by the Game Developers Association of the Philippines (GDAP), aimed to provide a platform for Filipino game developers to showcase their talents globally by reimagining traditional Filipino games in the Metaverse.

Participants were encouraged to infuse classic games like sipa, tumbang preso, or patintero with modern visuals and mechanics. The event promoted cultural identity, offered career opportunities in the Metaverse, and fostered community among developers.

SheInspires

SheInspires Game Jam was co-organized with Women In Blockchain Asia and W3 Guild Games.

Participants were encouraged to celebrate women’s narratives through game development on The Sandbox. The event’s theme was women’s empowerment, challenging participants to create games inspired by women’s stories, from historical figures to everyday heroines, using various gameplay elements.
