During the recent YGG Web3 Games Summit, Jeff Zirlin, Co-Founder of Sky Mavis, announced the return of Axie Infinity Classic, the version of the hit game that became very popular in the Philippines and has continued to maintain a strong user base in the country.

In a dramatic moment, Zirlin marked the return of Axie Classic through a “Thanos Snap”:

“Classic is back. So I believe we’ve coordinated it so that when I snap my fingers, the server will go on. So, let’s see if we can do this. One, Thanos (snaps), all right.”

Zirlin emphasized the Filipino Axie community’s role in bringing back Axie Classic, noting that despite no rewards, around 10,000 people continued playing the game at any given time.

This community passion led to a tournament attracting over 40,000 monthly active users, showcasing the enduring interest for the game, Zirlin said on stage at the YGG Web3 Games Summit.

“Classic is the game that brought Axie to greatness. Classic is the game that Filipinos we really know that you guys all love it. So, really, this is due to the voice of the community, where we saw back in July that there were still around 10,000 people playing Classic without any rewards, and then so we decided to start it up a little bit. We had a small tournament that actually attracted over 40,000 monthly active users. So it really is the voice of the community, the data that you produced and the feedback that has inspired this momentum for Classic. So we’re really, really excited to bring it back officially for you guys today.”

The Grand Tournament, a new game mode, has been introduced, promising intense competition and a coveted prize: a Mystic Axie. This addition aims to cater to the competitive spirit of Axie Classic players, offering a platform for showcasing their skills and strategies.

The Cursed Coliseum brings a fresh twist to the game. In every match, a random Axie on each team will be cursed, requiring players to adapt by replacing two random parts from the affected Axie. This feature adds unpredictability and requires players to think on their feet, enhancing the game’s strategic depth.

Earning AXP in Axie Classic

The integration of Axie Experience Points (AXP) into Axie Classic allows players to level up their Axies by participating in sessions and achieving victories. The first players to secure 12 wins in a session will also partake in a 1,875 AXS prize pool.

As part of the introduction, for the first three days, players can jump straight into the arena without the prerequisite of clearing PvE Map 10. Additionally, the energy requirement has been removed, allowing unlimited play, although AXP rewards remain capped.
