We start the roundup with an announcement about our upcoming event – #CryptoPH Conversations.
Silliman University Dean Florin Hilbay, distinguished lawyer and the most prominent Bitcoin advocate in the academe is slated to be special guest at the upcoming #CryptoPH Conversations event on April 19, 2024 co-organized by BitPinas and Luis Buenaventura, the Head of Crypto at GCash.
The event, co-presented by BLINC (Bitshares Labs), aims to delve into the implications of the Bitcoin Halving and its impact on the future market outlook for crypto in the Philippines.

Florin Hilbay Introduction
Florin Hilbay is a legal luminary and the former Solicitor General of the Philippines.
Currently the Dean of College of Law at Silliman University, Hilbay launched two books about Bitcoin – BITCOIN: An introduction to the peer-to-peer, open source, censorship- resistant, immutable, permissionless, decentralized, global, digital monetary network of the 21st century and Introduction to Bitcoin: Navigating The Future of Money.
Hilbay’s involvement is expected to enrich discussions on the legal and economic aspects of Bitcoin, especially in the context of the Bitcoin halving.
Joining Hilbay is Luis Buenaventura, head of crypto at GCash and co-organizer of the event, who will explore the market dynamics post-Bitcoin halving. The event promises an engaging format, fostering direct dialogue between speakers and attendees on critical issues such as Bitcoin ETFs and the potential role of Bitcoin as a reserve currency in the Philippines.

Binance website (not the app) blocked in the Philippines
Perhaps the biggest news last week is the SEC fulfilling its promise of blocking Binance in the Philippines. The NTC approved the SEC’s request for the blocking. Users in the country can no longer access Binance via the browser although the app is still working.
BSP Monetary Board Cancels Atomtrans Crypto Exchange (VASP) License
The Monetary Board, the policy-making body of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), has revoked the registration of ATOMTRANS TECH CORP., one of the virtual asset service providers (VASP) in the country.
The cancellation of the license that allows ATOMTRANS to deal with virtual currency transactions was articulated in Resolution NO. 145.A dated February 1, 2024 and publicly announced on March 25, 2024.
ZFT Unfazed By Criticism Over Paid Airdrop Seminar
ZFT (Zeefreaks Tribe), a prominent trading organization in the Philippines, is proceeding with its “Mastering Airdrops by ZFT” event despite facing criticism for charging a ₱3,000 attendance fee. The seminar, slated for April 6, 2024, at the Coins.ph Office in the Asian Century Center in BGC, aims to equip participants with strategies to maximize cryptocurrency airdrops.
Fintech Stables Launches AU to PH Cross-Border Remittances
Fintech firm Stables announced recently that it will be rolling out international remittance services to its worldwide userbase, with a primary focus on the Australia to Philippines corridor, by utilizing Circle Internet Financial (Circle)’s USDC as the underlying mechanism.
UnionBank’s UBX to Introduce Peso Stablecoin on Polygon
- UBX, the digital arm of the Aboitiz Group, plans to develop a peso-based stablecoin on the Polygon PoS platform.
- Leveraging Polygon’s blockchain technology, the stablecoin aims to revolutionize cost efficiency and transaction speed, addressing the significant role of remittances in the Philippine GDP.
- UBX emphasizes the project’s potential to minimize settlement time, transaction fees, and intermediary reliance, streamlining remittances and enhancing financial inclusion across the country.
First Regional Blockchain Campus Conference Announced
Blockchain Campus Conference 2024 is set to happen from May 2 – 3, 2024 in Pampanga. The conference aims to empower participants through education, experience, and networking opportunities in the field of blockchain technology.
SEC Issues Advisories vs Unlicensed Investment Schemes
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has issued a new series of warnings targeting unlicensed entities. The Commission emphasized that the operations of these firms resemble Ponzi schemes. It also pointed out that one entity is offering investments in cryptocurrency.
Trader Organization IMPACT Conduct Crypto Education Initiatives in Bohol
- IMPACT organized the CrypTalk education caravan in Bohol to educate over 1000 students about blockchain fundamentals and Web3 technologies.
- Speakers at the event included Nelson Lumbres and Melissa Mesias from ICP Hub Philippines, Steve Jimenez from IMPACT, and a representative from the Gensokishi project.
- DICT Bohol Provincial Officer Victor Magallanes highlighted the importance of such educational caravans in fostering understanding of emerging technologies like blockchain and cryptocurrency, emphasizing the need for accessible information in enhancing digital literacy.
