Despite the ongoing crypto winter, the inaugural Yield Guild Games (YGG) Web3 Games Summit (W3GS) successfully presented a diverse lineup of events in Taguig, Manila, from November 18–25, 2023, YGG said in a recent statement. 

The week-long summit included a Web3 Game Jam hackathon, a two-day conference, and a three-day expo, concluding with the XENO PRO TOUR MANILA 2023, featuring a special appearance by Manny Pacquiao. 

According to YGG, the event attracted 5,300 attendees and over 90 international speakers from a variety of industries across the world, highlighting the promising future of web3 gaming.

The recent conference emerged as a pivotal event in the Web3 gaming sector, hosting a range of discussions on game development, esports, and community engagement.

A key moment was Jeffrey “Jihoz” Zirlin’s announcement of Axie Classic’s new mode, Cursed Coliseum, and his emphasis on the Philippines’ significant role in web3 gaming. This was highlighted by the transition of Pixels to Sky Mavis’ Ronin network, drawing an impressive 82,000 Filipino players in just one day.

The summit addressed various critical topics, including the development of a strong vision for web3 games, the five main themes shaping the web3 gaming landscape in 2024, the design process behind these games, and the challenges faced by entrepreneurs in the web3 space. The importance of strong intellectual properties in web3 was also a focal point of discussion.

Expo Recap

The three-day expo showcased over 40 web3 games, including playable titles like Ragnarok Landverse, Mighty Action Heroes, Anito Legends, Axie Infinity: Origins, Pixelmon, PROJECT XENO, Parallel, and MetaCene.

Other highlighted games included Nine Chronicles, Sunflower Land, and Riftstorm. Side events included a Women’s Forum co-hosted by YGG Pilipinas and Emfarsis, with speakers such as Leah Callon-Butler, Angel Pui, Irene Umar, Lisa JY Tan, April Agregado, and Laura Nguyen, emphasizing collaboration and learning from each other’s strengths.

Game Jam Recap

YGG noted that Game Jam is a successful collaboration between them, W3GG, OP Games, STI College Global City, and Globe. The event included a 24-hour nonstop hackathon during which participants developed games and applications.

According to the organizers, the participants were guided by mentors from the Philippine web3 developer community and the Web3 Philippines Group.

The competitors’ entries were evaluated by a panel consisting of Jeff Espejo of Gala Games, Jaden Yan of Clique, and Renz Chong of BreederDAO.

The Online Series winners are Chrono Break of FutureKreep, Out of Time of Codex Corner, Switch of Prototype, Memory Loss, and Crystal Hop. 

The winners of the offline competition are: Team 10K Magic’s Pandora, who took first place and won ₱100,000 plus ₱100,000 from Globe; Team Overthinkers, who took second place with Quack in Time (₱50,000); and Team Langit Lupa, who took third place with Claudere Portalis (₱25,000).
